Key Discipline for Neuroscience of the Ministry of Education, China

Key Laboratory for Neuroscience of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Public Health, China

The history of the Department dates back to 1993, when Neuroscience Research Center, Beijing Medical University (predecessor of Peking University Health Science Center) was founded. An even earlier history may trace back to 1965, with the establishment of Team of Acupuncture and Moxibustion in Anesthesia and Analgesia in School of Basic Medical Sciences, Beijing Medical College(predecessor of Peking University Health Science Center) at the request of China’s late Premier ZHOU En-Lai . The Department focuses on both bench and bedside studies, and possesses four research directions including pain and analgesia, drug addiction and its treatment, neurodegeneration, injury and repair, and acupuncture. Research on acupuncture analgesia in the Department has been internationally recognized and remains leading in the field.

The past 20 years have witnessed several breakthroughs of the Department. It has received the honor to be Key Laboratories of Neuroscience of Ministry of Education and National Health and Family Planning Commission, as well as National Key Discipline of Neuroscience. Two faculty members (HAN Ji-Sheng and WAN You) serve as chief-scientists of the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program) by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Additional financial support comes from the Ministry of Education for Innovative Research, National Natural Science Foundations and other foundations. The Department has published more than 350 papers in SCI journals of the neurobiology field, and has received the National Award of Science and Technology Progress, and several awards at provincial or ministerial levels. The Department is the hosting institution of the Chinese Association for the Study of Pain (CASP), the China Branch of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), and the Beijing Society for Neuroscience. It is also a founding institution of the Chinese Neuroscience Society.

The Department is an important neuroscience research center in China. Currently, 19 faculty members, 24 M.Sc. students, 123 Ph.D. students, and 2 post-doctoral researchers work in the Department. Students from the Department have won National and Beijing Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Awards for several times. A number of alumni from the Department have obtained professorships in institutions worldwide, and become Chang Jiang Scholars, and recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.

  Research Activities include four parts:

  1. 1. Pain and analgesia
  2. 2. Drug addiction and its treatment
  3. 3. Neurodegeneration, injury and repair
  4. 4. Acupuncture
